The Hot Theory
Amy and I have been married for almost 14 years and despite what you think, we don’t sit around each night having deep theological discussions or just counting our blessings (and naming them one by one). Those are good things to do but some nights we discuss important issues like ‘what’s really happening on that crazy LOST island?‘ and ‘did the guy we sat next to at J. Alexander’s have on a hairpiece or just a really bad man perm?‘
So, last night we ended up talking about college, dating, and theories of relationships. We came up with this theory on the attractiveness of married couples. Disclaimer: we are all attractive in our special way AND we are fully aware there is much more to a relationship than what we look like. However, our little relationship theory goes like this:
Men always marry someone equal to or GREATER than their own hotness.
Women always marry someone equal to or LESS than their own hotness.
We know every rule has its exceptions but this is one where that exception is hard to find. The only one close to an exception was Keith Urban being hotter than Nicole Kidman, but that really is up to debate.
Also, the reason women can marry under their own hotness is becasue they place a greater value on traits like honor, humor, and how a man treats his Mommy.
Welcome to a snapshot of our messed up brains. We dare you to disprove our new theory.

hey bro,
your convo’s are evidently much deeper than ours
did you get my email?
wm
I’ll do my best to disprove that, once I find him.
Just kidding. This is interesting, though. I’m often struck by how many couples I know that look alike. Alike enough to look like siblings, actually. It’s weird.
Brian,
Love the theory but it could simply be that women are by far the fairer sex (Keith Urban excluded)
What’s weird about this is that in order to be “submissive” (and I use that term very liberally) I’ve always thought that Lane was “better” than me. Somehow in my head that makes it okay for me to defer to him. To think of myself as “hotter” than him really requires a whole paradigm shift for me. Because naturally, if I’m hotter, then I must be right!!!!
I’m thinking more about this and actually, I have two neighbors where the guy is clearly hotter than the girl. I’m talking solely about looks, but it’s definitely true. And if I knew how to take stealth cell-phone pics without their knowledge I’d prove it. But I haven’t been to brianseay training camp, so you’re just gonna have to trust me.
Tom Selleck married a woman way below his “Hot” level.
I think you are mostly correct, and I am eternally greatfull!
I could disprove your theory with photos too, but I’m too tired to upload them now. My husband is way hotter than me, way smarter, nicer, more patient, and just about everything else too. I married way out of my league IMHO; especially after celebrating 20 years of marriage in December.
Beth
just proves my “Guy’s number one key to success in life” which is marry a girl over your head and pray that she never figures it out.
Beth, I’m with you. I think my husband is way hotter than I am.
Some thoughts…
– Katy, “hotter” does not mean “righter”
– Beth, I’ve never met your husband but I am sure he would disagree with you
– Nancy – I think you watched way too much Magnum P.I. and your view of dear Tom is a little off. I looked at a picture of his wife and I believe your assertion is up for debate
– Katy – jsut pretend like you are reading your email on the phone and take a picture instead – very easy.
– Becky – do you live in Arkansas? That whole brother/sister theory is a little disturbing
Shaun and Brody have both met him (I honestly don’t want to know if either of them think he’s hot though!) and he’s everything I said he was and more; except that if he forgets to bring milk home today (again) the kids are going to turn on him for sure!
Beth
Beth –
I don’t doubt the validity and accuracy of your assesment of your husband. However, ask him tonight who he thinks is “hotter” out of the two of you and I am putting money on his answer.
Brian
We agree on the base level, but you must consider deeper elements such as:
1. The theory that guys get better looking with age, while girls…well…don’t. True? obviously you can prove both. But in the case where the guy is smokin’ and the girl isn’t, ask yourself – “how long have they been married?” It’s quite possible the girl could’ve been hot on the day of their nuptials, but has depreciated over the years in the looks department due to childbirthing, attending tupperware parties, and watching The View. Meanwhile, the guy really has to only take care of his waistline to garner the title of “more distinguished”. Case in point: Richard Gere; Sam Elliot; Tom Selleck; George Clooney; the list goes on…
2. Hot guy + less hot girl = girl has rich daddy?
Discuss…
Ohhhh, Sam Elliot…okay, I’m back. Sam’s wife is very beautiful though. Brian, go ask your mother who is hotter, Tom or his wife. She will agree with me. And I’m not talking about his first wife.
And yes, I will admit that I have watched a few Magnums in my day, but I have also watched her on the show and my statement still stands!
Brian,
Scott would no doubt tell you that he is the one who married out of his class and I’m hotter. I asked him long ago what attracted him to me for the very first time. His reply “you paid attention to me. You listened when I spoke and made me feel worthy of being listened to.” Today, he would tell you I’m the one who lead him to Christ. We could compliment each other all day long, but would have a hard time doing the same for ourselves. Kinda strange and sad too at times.
