Happy Birthday to Me (and Charlie)

I woke up this morning in Kampala a little down because it hit me that I would not spend my birthday with Amy and the kids. Now birthdays at this age (I am 35 today) are not that big of a deal to me but I know that it is important to my children. My kids love making the birthday breakfast, homeade cards, and singing the birthday song version where I “look like a monkey and smell like one too.” So, I woke up really missing that this morning.

However, the trip I am on is one where I did not get to choose a calendar and the relationships we are connecting with here are ones that I have had for a while. So we got up this morning and went to one of the best Compassion projects I have ever seen (that post will come later). But I promised my kids that the hideous Seay family birthday hat would make an appearance even if I am in Africa. So, here are the bday pics from the morning.

It turns out that I have the same exact birthday as Charlie Hall so we are both turning 35 today in Uganda sans our families. One of the highlights of the day was just before leaving the Compassion project we were told to return inside to say goodbye. We had already done this so being the trip leader and the one that knew we running behind schedule I protested and was simply told to stop it and get inside. Charlie and I were led in together and immediately 200 Ugandan children began singing “Happy Birthday’ at the top of their lungs (they even did the “you look like a monkey” version). I think Charlie would agree that nothing is better than sounds of our own children but I can’t think of a better alternate way to have Happy Birthday sung to you. Now Charlie is not in my family but he is a friend and was brave enough to don the Seay Family birthday hat for the amusement of my family and this blog. We are holding the birthday sign that the project made for us.

We are heading out in a few minutes for the Passion Kampala event where they are now expecting close to 30,000 college students.

  1. Sounds like a great birthday!

  2. I love the picture of you in the hat with the kids around you! Definately a great way to spend your birthday, just shy of spending it with your kids.

I got that same birthday hat for my 16th birthday and my dad made me wear it at the resturant we were eating at that night …I wonder if I can find that picture, I’ll have to blog about it!

Have a great trip amd keep up the blogs! I love hearing about the good being done in Africa by Compassion!

  3. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN (and Charlie)!!!

Oh, this picture made me so happy this morning. My dad is here and we both loved imagining the Ugandan children singing the monkey version.

Would you do me a favor? Please tell Charlie that Marvelous Light has ousted DCB’s Every Move I Make as Abigail’s favorite song, and that when I hear her belting it out in the back seat it brings LOTS of joy and encouragement to my soul. There are many, many days when it seems like it’s all darkness for her, and God specifically reminds me of His hope and His plan for her through this particular song. No matter what her mood is, she always wants to listen to it in the car, so it’s a daily thing with us. Just wanted to say thanks. :-)

And you’re old. Just a reminder.

  4. Hahahahaha!! This is AWESOME. Hope the rest of your birthday is just as fun!

  5. Happy Birthday! Shaun says you smell like a monkey. Tell Charlie to stop playing with his beard.

  6. Happy Birthday!

  7. Happy birthday, Brian. I’m sure your family would rather you be with them, but it sounds like God is blessing your day with the next best thing — the global family.

  15. Happy birthday! Now that you’re old enough to be president, I expect to see an outline of your platform and potential running mates soon. Now that Ron Paul is out of contention, I need someone else to vote for.

  19. [...] I share a birthday with my sister, Jenn, and Charlie Hall. You might remember last year for my birthday I was in Uganda with Charlie and I convinced him to don the Seay Family hat. [...]
